Have teachers waited long enough for change?
It seems that the more we learn about teaching industry, the more we find out how underpaid, overworked and unappreciated teachers really are. We have been hearing of teacher strikes and we should support them. The system is indeed broken. Would you work for an employer if you had to get laid off and have to reapply for a job? How can we expect teachers to come in day in and out to teach our kids when they don’t have job security?
According to a Mercury news article, the Bay Area has fewer layoff notices than expected but counter that with how many schools have closed, the increase in class size and how many teachers have lost their jobs, the low numbers are not something to be happy about.
If we are to fix the broken system, we cannot wait years, it needs to happen much faster than that. We cannot expect teachers to perform, kids to excel with a system that is 50 plus years old. That is like expecting a race driver to win a race with a rusty car that is on its last days.
